Editing

ACES

Nothing of note — just a good site to find editors.

Fiverr

Really, this place has a lot of options for different things: editors, artists, etc.

Cadmus Publishing

Specifically, you will want to reach out to the Author Liaison who works specifically with incarcerated authors. You can reach that person at info@cadmuspublishing.com (they will route the email to the right person), or 360-565-6459 (this is the number straight to the Author Liaison desk, so that they can accept prison phone calls).

Ambler Document Processing

No known website. You will be working with Jane Eichwold, who works with a lot of incarcerated authors. You can email her at jane@protypeexpress.com.

Beta Readers

Goodreads beta reader group

A great free resource for finding beta readers of all types. Be sure to read the rules of the group and understand what is required and what you are looking for. A huge help for your first time looking for a beta reader.

Betareader.io

If you want to work with a company specializing in Beta Readers, this is probably the best one out there. Be prepared for more fees than finding them yourself, though.

Word Out Books

This division of Winding Hall is set up specifically for incarcerated authors. However, as of this writing, they are not accepting new submissions until Summer of 2023.

Book Bub

For readers, BookBub is a free service that helps millions of readers discover books they'll love while providing publishers and authors with a way to drive sales and find new fans. As an author, you can submit your book with a special deal (like $0.99 for the epub) for a limited time for BookBub readers to take advantage of. Not all publishers allow this because they still have to cover their costs (for example, I know Cadmus does not, and I believe the same can be said for Word Out Books) — but if you completely self-publish, then it can be a good option.

Booky Call

It's like Tinder, but for books. It's a bit off-beat, but if you wanna try something different... Basically, a reader puts in their preferences, and then they can 'swipe right' on books they're interested in. Books are presented as though they were a potential date, with ideas for date night with the book, what the book is into, etc. Cute.

Marketing

Really, there are too many options for marketing service providers to list. And to be frank, I haven't tried all of them out for whether they will work with incarcerated authors. I'll put a couple of the big ones up here. Let me know if you have any input — like if you reach out to them, how was your experience, etc, so I can include any changes in any future updates!

Interviews/Journalists

Radio Guest List

This place has a free subscription you can get in your email every week (normal email only, not prison email systems) that will tell you about places that are looking for a specific type of person to interview. As the name implies, this is almost always for radio interviews, though they also do a few podcasts and the like. If you get a paid subscription (which is pretty cheap) you get even more emails with more opportunities. Cadmus has had a lot of success with this group.

HARO (Help a Reporter Out)

This is a bit more difficult to navigate — your people on the outside will be doing much of this work for you, but it is a great resource if you have the right people.

Press Releases

All of these do basically the same thing. At Cadmus (when I was there) we used Newswire, but I don't think there's really much difference between any of them besides cost.
